How is the list of plans with an agent ordered?

Each provider is placed by its cheapest plan that includes a registered agent, whether for good or for an opening period, and plans at the same price follow our rating.

Bizee (formerly Incfile) and Inc Authority both list a plan at $0. Bizee goes first on our rating, 8.0 against 7.1. doola comes last because Starter costs $297/yr, even though it is the one plan here whose agent has no stated end date.^{5, 6}

The order uses plan price alone. It doesn't weigh what the agent costs after the free period, and that renewal is where these plans pull apart.

What does the agent cost once the included period ends?

Every included agent turns into a recurring charge unless you cancel it or name a different agent, and on this list the renewal ranges from $125/yr to $249/year.^{2, 4}

Read the table against the plan price. Bizee (formerly Incfile) Basic costs $0 up front, and the second year brings an agent bill of $149/year. Bizee says every one of its formation packages comes with one year of Registered Agent Service for free.^{1, 8, 11}

BizFilings Basic reaches its renewal sooner. Its free agent lasts a few months, and after that the rate is $220/yr, with notice approximately a month before auto renewal.^{9, 12}

Inc Authority's order page warns "Cancel within the first 12-months to avoid charges". Its terms also allow a $50 late penalty on a missed renewal payment.¹³

With Northwest Registered Agent, enrolment goes further than the agent. Its agent customers are auto-enrolled in Compliance Services billed in annual auto-pay, and that service charges $100 + state fees each time it files an annual report.^{14, 15}

How do you stop an included agent from renewing?

You cancel with the provider, and at most of these services you also show that another agent is on record with the state, because the LLC's filing still names the old one until you change it.

• Bizee (formerly Incfile): Cancel anytime by assigning a new registered agent with the state and notifying Bizee of the change.¹⁶
• Inc Authority: Cancel anytime by phone or email; not retroactive, may require proof of new agent or dissolution.¹³
• Northwest Registered Agent: Cancel anytime through the online account; no cancellation fee.¹⁷
• BizFilings: Any time, with written proof of a new registered agent on file.¹²
• doola publishes no agent-specific steps. Its general terms read: Delete account any time, or email help@doola.com.¹⁰

The safe order is to file the change of agent with the state first and cancel the old service second. The guide to cancelling or switching a service walks through both steps, and state pages such as forming an LLC in Texas name the change form and its fee.

Which providers sell the agent separately instead?

The other providers we compare list no agent in the LLC plans we record, so their customers buy one as a separate service or name someone else.

• Tailor Brands charges $199/year.¹⁸
• ZenBusiness gives 50% off the first year ($99) when you form an LLC, then $199/yr.¹⁹
• LegalZoom lists $249/year for first-time registered agent customers.²⁰
• Swyft Filings bills $149 per quarter ($596/year).²¹
• InCorp Services lists $129/year.²²
• Harbor Compliance charges $99 first year for new customers, then $159 annually, and its terms ask for notice of non-renewal at least 90 days before the end of the current term.^{23, 24}
• Rocket Lawyer sells it for $125 with a Plus or Pro membership.²⁵

Two caveats apply to the list itself. Northwest Registered Agent's free year of agent service is stated on the corporation page, and its LLC page doesn't say the agent is included, though the formation plan we record lists it. doola calls its agent free with doola’s Formation Service but doesn't state for how long.^{26, 27}
