Northwest prices its package as $39 + state fees, and Tailor Brands lists its plans before the state fee too. The state fee table gives that amount for each state, and the LLC cost calculator adds it for you.1

Where do Tailor Brands and Northwest differ most?

Northwest is a registered agent company that also forms LLCs, and its package is built around the agent. Tailor Brands sells tiered plans built around services that continue after formation, and sells the agent separately.

Tiered plans against a single package

Tailor Brands lists Lite at $0 with no yearly price, then Essential at $199/yr and Elite at $249/yr as yearly prices. Essential and Elite list annual compliance, which the plan cards describe as mandatory report filing & updates, plus an operating agreement and funding search. Elite adds branding tools (DIY website/online store, 8 free logos, digital business card) and a 1-year free domain.2

Northwest has no tiers. Its package includes the agent's first year, an operating agreement template, legal form templates, annual report reminders and a service it calls Brand Protection. Northwest also says it provides a domain name, website, email address, and phone number for free.3

Our count of services included for good is 7 for Elite and 3 for Northwest. The agent year doesn't count, because it turns into a paid renewal. Tailor Brands' count includes a legal document library that Tailor Brands supplied and its public plan cards don't list.

How do their registered agent terms compare?

Northwest charges less for the agent on its own, $125 per year against $199/year for Tailor Brands, and includes the first year with formation. Tailor Brands supplied its price; it isn't yet on a public page.4, 5

Both cover every state. Northwest says it has offices in every state plus D.C. and Puerto Rico, while Tailor Brands offers its agent in all 50 states. Tailor Brands also supplied that its agent renews at the same price, which isn't on a public page.5, 6, 7

Mail is where the details split. Northwest scans legal papers, caps them at 15 per year before a fee may apply, and also scans normal business mail up to 5 docs per year at no charge. Scanned mail is destroyed 30 days after scanning, and originals can be requested for a fee, within 30 days of original receipt when a scan fails. Tailor Brands says it will scan your documents and upload them to your business dashboard, and it publishes no cap.4, 7, 8

On the public record, Northwest's address is listed on public filings instead of the owner's. That is true of any agent's address in the agent field, Tailor Brands' included. Tailor Brands' agent terms say you must not designate or otherwise refer to the Registered Address as your business location in any public materials, and it sells a separate Virtual Address product without a published price. Northwest sells mail forwarding at $20/month in some states.4, 9, 10

What does the second year cost?

Northwest's package fee doesn't repeat, so its year-two bill comes from the agent and the annual report service. Tailor Brands' year-two bill is the plan fee again, plus an agent or bookkeeping if you keep them.

Northwest's agent renews at $125/yr. Northwest says registered agent customers are auto-enrolled in its renewal service, which files the annual report for $100 + state fees, charged at filing. That service is billed in annual auto-pay, and to stop a charge you must cancel at least one business day before next charge date.1, 11, 12

Tailor Brands prices Essential and Elite at $199/yr and $249/yr, and the report filing comes inside that fee. The agent is extra at the supplied $199/year. Bookkeeping, a trial on every plan, is $39/month if kept; the free trial expires after 30 days.2, 5, 13

Our year-two plan totals are $498 for Tailor Brands Elite and $39 for Northwest, which leave out agents and the state's yearly fees. Northwest's total also leaves out its report filing, and its agent renews at $125/yr once the free year ends. The LLC cost guide covers those state charges.1

Does either publish how fast it files?

Tailor Brands does and Northwest doesn't. Tailor Brands states 1 business day on Essential and Elite, which it lists as 1 day expedited processing, and 14 business days on Lite.2, 13

Northwest's pages give the states' processing times but no handling time of its own, and they list no rush option sold by Northwest. Our LLC timeline guide separates a service's step from the state's review.

Which offers more support for a first business?

Tailor Brands includes all three supports we count for first-time founders. Northwest includes none of the three supports in its package and sells annual report filing for an extra charge.

Tailor Brands' coaching program, a 12-week accelerator, pairs you with a business trainer, and Navi, its AI assistant, is built into every plan. Its funding search matches grants, loans and tax credits. Northwest offers deadline reminders, and its contact page says a real person picks up the phone or types out a response when you call or email.14, 15, 16, 17

What if you change your mind?

Northwest gives the longer refund window; Tailor Brands' terms treat fees as non-refundable. Both let you cancel from your online account.

Northwest's terms make purchases non-refundable after 90 days, with state fees non-refundable. Tailor Brands' terms say all fees are non-refundable, and any refund it issues has a $29 service fee taken off. Northwest says you can terminate or cancel your Service anytime by logging onto your account, and there are no fees to cancel. Tailor Brands says you cancel by visiting your account settings, and it keeps auto-renewal on by default for subscription services.9, 12, 18, 19

Which reader does each one suit?

Northwest fits readers who want the lowest upfront price and an agent included; Tailor Brands fits readers who want reports filed and help after formation. Each line names the deciding fact.

Satisfaction, the part of our rating with the most weight, is 9.6 for Tailor Brands and 8.2 for Northwest, from Trustpilot scores of 4.8 / 5 and 4.1. Northwest's score rests on 306 reviews, against 17,815 reviews for Tailor Brands. On services and dashboard it's 9.2 to 6.8, and on plan value 5.5 to 3.7. Tailor Brands and Northwest questions

Is Northwest's formation really that cheap?

The package is $39 plus the state fee, and it doesn't renew. From year two the agent costs $125/yr, and agent customers are enrolled in report filing at $100 + state fees, charged at filing.1, 11

Which one keeps my home address off state filings?

Either agent's address goes in the agent field, so neither one puts your home address there. Other fields, such as the principal office, follow your state's rules. Tailor Brands sells a separate business address product, and Northwest sells mail forwarding at $20/month in some states.10

Can I get an EIN without a Social Security number?

Northwest sells a foreign EIN service at $200 for applicants without one. Tailor Brands links a sign-up flow for non-US citizens from its LLC page but doesn't publish whether its EIN service covers that case.20, 24

Does Northwest serve founders outside the U.S.?

Northwest doesn't say on the pages we checked, apart from its EIN service for people without an SSN. Our list of services for non-U.S. founders shows which providers state it.

Why is Tailor Brands rated higher if Northwest costs less?

Plan cost is part of plan value, which weighs least in our rating. Satisfaction weighs most, and Tailor Brands has the higher Trustpilot score; it also sells more service types. See how we rate for the weights.
