Facts checked October 13 to 15, 2026.

LegalZoom rates 8.1 and ZenBusiness 8.0 out of ten on our method, so the two sit close together. The real split is billing. ZenBusiness states 1 business day of processing on its paid plans; LegalZoom states 5 to 14 business days (standard processing).1, 2

Auto-renewal, cancelling and refunds are as each provider states them for its registered agent and subscription services.

Both companies list their plan prices before the state filing fee, so add your state's charge to either column. The state fee table has every state's figure, and the LLC cost calculator adds it to a plan for you. For every plan from every provider in one view, see all plans side by side.

Where do ZenBusiness and LegalZoom actually differ?

They differ most on how they bill after the first purchase, on stated filing speed, and on what each compared plan keeps for good. The list below names the fact that decides each point.

Plans and what each tier adds

Each company sells three tiers, and both start at a free plan. ZenBusiness Starter is $0 and does not renew. Pro is $199 and renews at $199/yr, adding an EIN (the federal tax ID a bank asks for), an operating agreement template and annual report filings with up to 2 amendments per year. Premium adds a domain, a business email and a document library.1, 3

LegalZoom Basic is $0, Managed Service is $249 and Expert Service is $299, each paid once. Managed Service adds the EIN, an operating agreement and a report on the licenses and permits your business may need. Expert Service goes further with attorney and accountant access, but those items run on a trial.2

Which costs less by the end of the second year?

LegalZoom Managed Service costs $249 across both years and ZenBusiness Premium costs $598, before state fees, as long as every trial item is cancelled in time.

The condition applies mostly to LegalZoom. Its legal forms library, eSignature, advisor access and advisor filing review are included only for a trial, and the plan bills $49/mo after 30 days. Left running through the first year, that subscription alone would cost more than the gap between the two plans. On Expert Service the follow-on charge is $99/mo.2

ZenBusiness has one trial item on its paid plans, the website builder, included for 30 days and then $15/mo. Its bigger cost is the yearly renewal on Pro and Premium. Those renewals keep the annual report filing service running, which LegalZoom sells separately at $99 + state filing fees, billed once. ZenBusiness sells the same filing on its own for $100 per report. Our LLC cost guide explains which yearly state fees come on top of either.1, 4, 5

Which files faster, and what does rush cost?

ZenBusiness states 1 business day on Pro and Premium and 7 to 10 business days on Starter. LegalZoom states 5 to 14 business days (standard processing) and sells expedited processing for $99.1, 6

LegalZoom says its expedited option can get documents to the state in as little as one business day. It also says these are service processing times, not state approval times. ZenBusiness sells rush for $79 as an add-on to Starter, since Pro and Premium already state 1 business day. LegalZoom publishes its times on comparison pages that still use its older plan names, so the figure is not tied to a current tier. Our LLC timeline guide separates the provider's step from the state's review.1, 6

How do their registered agent services differ?

ZenBusiness charges $199/year for its registered agent and $99 for the first year when you form with it. LegalZoom charges $249/year (first-time registered agent customers), and the LegalZoom pages we checked list no discount for forming with it.5, 7, 8

A registered agent is the person or company that accepts legal papers for your LLC at an address in the state. Neither formation plan includes one. Both services renew on their own. LegalZoom's agent service renews at the purchase rate each year, with the rate subject to change. ZenBusiness's terms say ZenBusiness may increase its fees for RA Services, so neither price is fixed for good.8, 9

Mail handling differs. ZenBusiness scans documents, with originals forwarded only if they can't be copied. LegalZoom lists other mail uploaded to account and emailed. With either, the agent's own address goes in the agent field of your state filing. Other fields, such as the principal office or the people named on the filing, follow your state's rules, so the service does not hide them.8, 9

How do cancelling and refunds compare?

ZenBusiness says its agent service is cancelled by contacting customer support by phone. LegalZoom allows phone or online cancelling but says proof of new RA may be required, meaning it may ask to see that a new agent is on file with the state.9, 10

Refunds are narrow at both. ZenBusiness refunds its agent service only if the service has not yet been used, and for yearly subscriptions cancelled after 30 days, its general terms say no prorated refunds will be issued. LegalZoom's agent terms refund prepaid fees when LegalZoom ends the service, and its general guarantee covers subscriptions within 30 days of initial subscription purchase. Its terms don't say whether that guarantee reaches the agent service.9, 10

Can founders outside the U.S. use either one?

LegalZoom says it forms LLCs for founders with no residency or travel and can get an EIN without the need for a Social Security Number. ZenBusiness does not say on the pages we checked whether it serves founders abroad.11

LegalZoom's statements come from a country page aimed at Australian founders, which also says it will help open your account with providers within days of formation. If you live outside the U.S., our list of services for non-U.S. founders shows which other providers state the same.11

Which reader does each one fit?

Each fit below rests on a published fact, not on a judgment of quality. Read them as matches between a need and a term.

Full details sit on the ZenBusiness review, the LegalZoom review, ZenBusiness pricing and LegalZoom pricing. If neither fits, LegalZoom alternatives and ZenBusiness alternatives list other options, ordered by our rating.

Questions people ask

Is ZenBusiness cheaper than LegalZoom?

In year one, ZenBusiness Pro at $199 costs less than LegalZoom Managed Service at $249. In year two Pro renews at $199/yr while the LegalZoom plan fee does not repeat. LegalZoom's advisor subscription at $49/mo can reverse that if it isn't cancelled.1, 2

Why does LegalZoom rate higher if ZenBusiness has the better Trustpilot score?

ZenBusiness scores 9.6 on satisfaction against 9.2, and 4.7 on plan value against 3.8. LegalZoom wins services and dashboard, 9.2 to 7.6, because it sells more kinds of business services, including attorney access and a grant search. The weights are on how we rate.

Do ZenBusiness and LegalZoom include the state filing fee?

No. Both list plan prices plus state fees, so the state's charge is added at checkout with either one. The state fee table shows what each state charges.

Which includes an EIN for less?

Both include an EIN on their middle and top plans. Bought on its own, LegalZoom's costs less: $79 against ZenBusiness's $99 one-time. On the free plans of both, an EIN is an add-on.5, 15

Which one has more items included for good?

ZenBusiness Premium keeps 6 counted services for good and LegalZoom Managed Service keeps 4. Items on a trial don't count in either total. The package contents guide lists which services plans tend to keep.

What happens if I cancel ZenBusiness Pro after year one?

The plan stops renewing, and with it the annual report filings it covered. ZenBusiness then sells report filing on its own at $100 per report, before the state's own report fee.5
